Sungbo’s-Eredo Monument: Augustine University to Host Historic Presentation Workshop on First-Ever Archaeological LiDAR Survey in Africa
Augustine University, Ilara-Epe is set to host a landmark event, the Sungbo’s-Eredo LiDAR Presentation Workshop, scheduled for August 5th and 6th, 2024, at the University Convocation Hall.
This workshop is expected to unveil the findings from the first-ever archaeological LiDAR survey conducted in Africa, specifically focusing on the historic Sungbo’s-Eredo monument.
Organized in partnership with the Ife Sungbo Archaeological Team, the workshop aims to present and handover the Sungbo’s-Eredo LiDAR survey data, marking an essential moment in the conservation and promotion efforts of this historic monument.
This workshop follows a previous successful event held on June 24th, 2021, focused on research concerning the preservation of Sungbo’s-Eredo.
Building upon the outcomes of the earlier workshop, the upcoming event will delve deeper into the findings and implications of the LiDAR survey, offering new insights into the monument’s archaeological significance and preservation strategies.
Distinguished guests expected to attend include HRM Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom; Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Art and Culture; Mr. Olugbile Holloway, Director General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments; Representatives from the US Mission in Nigeria, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), and National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM); Professor Gerard Chouin, Principal Investigator from William & Mary, Virginia, USA; Professor Adisa Ogunfolakan from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and Professor Neil Norman from William and Mary, Virginia, USA.
Significantly, the LiDAR research, the results of which will be presented at the workshop, is fully funded by the U.S. Mission Nigeria through the Ambassador Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP).
