Augustine University Commences Holy Week with a Vibrant Palm Sunday Celebration
By Anita Etea
With palm fronds raised and ancient hymns sung, Augustine University on Sunday 24th March, 2024, celebrated the beginning of the Holy Week with a community Palm Sunday mass.
The day began with the students and members of staff present at the car park of the new chapel where Rev. Fr. Anthony Akinwale led with a prayer, after which was followed by the blessing and distribution of the palm fronds to signify the commemoration of the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ to Jerusalem.
Following the distribution of the palm fronds was a procession into the convocation hall where the second part of the mass took place which included readings from the Bible on the events leading up to the betrayal and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
The University chaplain in his homily spoke on moral wrongs as he said, “We become enslaved when we desire what we ought not to desire”. He also emphasised the concept of surrendering one’s own desires as he said, “It is by uniting our will to the will of the father that we find peace”.
In the chaplain’s final words leading up to his closing prayer, he urged the students and members of staff present to be solemn during this Holy week as he said, “our prayer life is our strength”.
